Core values
Core values are the beliefs that guide us through life. They help us distinguish right from wrong and remind us of what we are willing to stand for. Core values can show up in many forms—our spiritual or cultural beliefs, political perspectives, or personal ethics.
When something doesn’t feel right, it often means we are out of alignment with our core values. That inner discomfort is a signal. If it doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. When we live in harmony with our values, we live more authentically. We stop judging ourselves or comparing our path to someone else’s, and instead walk forward in truth.
The world is full of unique philosophies, religions, and cultural beliefs that provide beautiful teachings and values. For example, the Seven Grandfather Teachings in Ojibwe culture offer timeless Indigenous wisdom on ethics to strive for: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth.
Core values can also include qualities like fairness, creativity, openness, and optimism. Depending on who you ask—or what philosopher, culture, or religion you study—different values and virtues rise to the forefront. But one thing remains constant: there is strength and beauty in knowing who you are.
By defining your own core values, you gain clarity about who you are and who you want to become. They serve as a compass, guiding you toward your highest purpose rather than being pulled by ego or outside pressures.
So I’ll leave you with this question: What are your core values—and why?
